Yahoo Answers For Graded Compression Stockings
Question I'm a quadriplegic with limited use of my legs and just started wearing compression stockings a few weeks ago?
but they don't seem to be helping with the swelling in my feet and the temperature of the skin below my knees...I use a wheelchair and it's impossible to transfer out of it into a recliner to elevate my legs...should I try a different stocking ? should I forget the stockings altogether ? I could really use some professional help here please !

Best Answer mnw, as a quadriparetic there is going to be very limited use of the muscles of the legs. This is the reason for the fluid in the ankles. There are very few options available to you. You can use gradient hose but that would only help if they were applied when the swelling was at its lowest point. It would then help to keep the fluid out or at least reduced. What I would suggest is that at night or sometime during the day you have compression pump sleeves put on. The graduated type would be the best but any pumping system would be helpful. Once you have used that for a half to a full hour or so then have the compression hose applied. This would be the best way to control the problem. If you have the insurance that would cover products such a T.E.D. stockings get those. They are specifically measured for you and would be graded appropriately.
Question Can I wear compression stockings to bed?
My calves and feet feel the worst at night. I drink plenty of water, but it's like they're retaining fluid (I get the same stiffness and bloaty-feeling in my hands at night). My MIL gave me a few pairs of compression stockings which I wear randomly (they just don't work with summer attire), and when I put them on at night, it makes a world of difference...but I'm scared to sleep in them. Can I sleep in them if that is the only time I'm wearing them?

Best Answer While most doctors say that you shouldn't wear the compression stockings in bed, I beg to differ. I suffer from 2 past blood clots in my legs and one of the forever side effects of this is constant pain now in the legs. I have found that the compression stockings really do help with the pain. I try to not wear them everyday in bed though. I used to go one day on and one day off. But recently, my doctor told me about support pantyhose (different than the compression hose). So I have been wearing them for the past few months instead of the compression stockings at night. -Seems to help a little... BTW, I normally wear 20-30/30-40mmgh compression during the day, I tried to do this kind of compression at night but they are just too uncomfortable. (I would suggest talking to your doctor if you wear this kind of compression at night). So you might wanna just wear the stockings during the day and put on some support pantyhose or get a lower grade compression of stocking like 8-15/15-20 mmgh for at night -thats if you are not wearing them already at that compression. But go talk to your doctor about this as I am only just one person in the world giving you advice on something that is kind of frowned upon by many doctors.
